Kenya Holidays from the UK: Safari or Safari and Beach?

Planning a Kenya holiday from the UK? Compare a focused seven-night safari break with a ten-night safari and beach trip, and make the transfers work.

The most useful question when planning a Kenya holiday from the UK is not how many places you can fit in. It is whether you want your free time beside wildlife, beside the ocean, or split between the two.

A seven-night holiday and a ten-night holiday need different shapes. Decide how many nights you have after landing, then compare the transfers before adding another destination. These suggested itineraries are flexible planning examples, not bookable packages.

Seven nights: give one safari region your attention

For a week in Kenya, consider two Nairobi nights, four nights in one safari area and a final Nairobi night before flying home. The city nights can sit at either end according to the flights, but avoid treating an overnight journey as a full day of holiday.

One option is to build the wildlife portion around Amboseli. Kenya Wildlife Service describes the park's elephant habitat and safari setting in its wildlife destinations guide. Choose an operator and accommodation based on the activities included, the access route and your preferred pace. Wildlife sightings and clear mountain views cannot be promised.

You could instead choose a different safari region and keep the same structure. The point is to make fewer moves, not to declare one park best for every visitor. Ask the operator how much of each transfer day is spent travelling and how many meaningful outings remain.

If a safari is not your priority, swap the four-night block for Naivasha. The Naivasha couples' itinerary offers a shorter starting plan that you can stretch with quiet afternoons. Search Naivasha getaways and confirm each property's location before arranging activities.

Ten nights: add the beach without losing the holiday

With ten nights, a possible split is two in Nairobi, three on safari, four at the coast and one before departure. Start by confirming a workable safari-to-coast journey. If it requires an extra overnight stop, include that honestly in the plan rather than squeezing it into a supposedly free beach day.

Choose one coastal base. Diani and Watamu make different starting points, so compare actual transfers, the kind of stay you prefer and the activities you want. Our Diani versus Watamu guide helps you make that choice without assuming every coast property is on the beach.

Four nights in the same place gives you space for one outing, one open day and a less hurried arrival. Check whether beach access is direct or requires a walk or drive. A sea-view photograph does not establish private beach access, a private pool or an included water activity.

Browse Diani options or Watamu options, then confirm the dates and specific amenities with the host.

Make the flights and stays agree

Use the Kenya Airways London–Nairobi route page as one starting point for live flight searches. Check the London airport on both journeys, operating carrier, baggage and arrival date. If you are travelling from elsewhere in the UK, include the journey to your departure airport in the comparison.

Do the same for every connection within Kenya. “Nairobi” on an itinerary is not enough detail: ask for the named airport or terminal, transfer arrangements and check-in deadline. Check whether separate tickets protect the onward journey if the first flight changes.

Before paying, put these on one sheet:

For a beach-focused trip, compare an itinerary using a coastal arrival or departure if available on your dates. It may reduce backtracking, but price the complete route before deciding.

Decide what is worth spending more on

For a shorter holiday, paying for a convenient transfer can be more valuable than a larger room you barely use. For several coast nights, a comfortable outdoor space or reliable meal arrangements may matter more than adding another excursion.

Compare like-for-like quotes. Check whether meals, park entry, guides, vehicles and airport transfers are included. Ask about the full cost for your actual group; a headline per-person figure may depend on a room or vehicle being shared.

If you are celebrating, use our Kenya honeymoon planning guide to prioritise the details that matter to you. Any dinner setup, late checkout or special room arrangement needs confirmation rather than an assumption.

Check the current travel requirements

Read the FCDO Kenya travel advice and entry requirements for your passport and route. Use Kenya's official eTA guidance and government inbound insurance portal to check the current application and cover requirements.

Review the regions and activities in your itinerary against your insurance before committing. This guide does not replace current entry, health or regional travel advice.

Common planning questions

Should I add the coast to a one-week Kenya holiday?

Only if the actual connections leave enough time for the experience you want. For a first safari-focused week, one main wildlife region is often the more comfortable choice. A coast-focused week can work without a separate safari block.

Is a package better than booking separate parts?

Compare responsibility as well as price. Establish who handles delays and amendments, what is included, and which parts remain your responsibility. Several separately confirmed bookings need more coordination.

Where should I start looking for accommodation?

Start with the route, then choose the stay. Compare Nairobi accommodation around your planned activities and transfer points, and read the booking policies before confirming.
